The Poker Bots Issue
The issue of poker bots is an ever present one in online poker. It has basically been around from the very beginnings, and the number of companies and various websites offering poker bots for sale for $20 has only increased ever since. For starters, I think we can rule out these $20 offers, without a second thought. Why would anyone sell something that’s potentially worth hundreds of thousands of dollars for a few bucks? I know these sites feature rather convincing sales copy, but that does little to defeat the above logic.
Can poker bots successfully compete against real poker players at all?
Does current technology make that possible? The answer to that would have to be yes and no. Technology is certainly capable of creating a poker bot that can successfully take on the world’s best players: it has been proven and it can be done. The same way I can’t replicate NASA’s space shuttle in my back yard though, I can’t possibly create a poker bot that could achieve anything close to what it’s supposed to. The poker bot which proved its capabilities against some of the top professionals was developed in a university lab, with no efforts and costs spared. It was also programmed with help from some of the world’s top professionals, so yes, if you can pull all those resources together, you will definitely be able to create a viable poker bot. Also, you probably won’t go around selling it for $20 on some website that screams “scam” from a mile away – I can pretty much guarantee that.
“a poker bot needs to be able to think, so a layer of AI was added on top of the odds-calculus capabilities” it sounds so simple, doesn’t it? As a person who’s worked with AI, I can tell you it’s anything but that, and a statement like that is not just an insult to reasonably smart readers but it’s also a gross underestimation of the intricacy of the game of poker.
Does this mean there are no poker bots playing online?
Unfortunately, it doesn’t. Some of the experts seem to think that the very entities which use poker botting the most are the online poker sites themselves. They allegedly do it to secure critical player liquidity (the same reason for which they offer rake rebate deals and poker propping), without which they would never survive, so the logical argument is certainly there. Most of the mainstream poker rooms make a clear case of not wanting to see any such attempts made at their tables though.
Poker rooms have a number of ways to detect poker botting, an offense which is considered of the highest degree and which is usually punished by the ceasing of all funds and by the closure of the suspected players’ accounts. One of the ways poker rooms can detect botting is through a software hook which is installed onto the client’s computer together with the client side of the software. This hook has the ability to detect programs running in the background, and it can identify poker bots too.
The solution can be tricked relatively easily though. Botters almost always use a second computer (possibly a laptop hooked up to a PC) to mimic human interaction perfectly and to keep the computer on which the software runs clean. While this move may be a strike scored by the botters, it doesn’t mean botting is anywhere as close to required minimal efficiency as some would like to believe. The poker industry has the resources to raise hell against bots and botters, and therefore I believe that commercially available poker bots are absolutely useless in today’s advanced online poker environment.
If you want to give botting a go, I’ll have to advise against it. Your bot will probably start by losing money, and it’ll continue with having your account suspended and your bankroll confiscated.
Pacocha in Las Vegas: Jet lag, tragaperring and landing in Rio
Pacoche, as in the previous year’s edition, has moved up to Las Vegas to follow the WSOP and Poker-Red cover for the Main Event. While the climax arrives, send us their stories about their experiences in Sin City. Here’s the first.
It was daylight when I opened my eyes … I thought that had long rested not so well with the jet lag but you never know. I had fallen asleep watching TV almost instantly and now someone was playing at Wimbledon. Nor was waste bags. Look at the clock on the table to see if the jet lag was making mischief and, as feared, there were only 6 am.
He had slept only five hours and a bit, well … a matter of forcing myself to sleep for a couple of hours. As in other trips to Las Vegas the scale had been interminable. This time over in Philadelphia had touched me go to the interrogation room (at least I do not cache or threatened as happened to other players). They seemed to only be interested in knowing if I had more than $ 10,000 in cash (you must declare if so) but my answer! “And I would like!” Seems convinced them and we were within the USA in time to re-invoicing and to see how the flight was delayed peak time and …
The flight of course was full of Spanish and Italian eager to start playing as soon as cash. If chairs could be turned back on trains as they would have played fortunes. Among the familiar faces on the flight were Luis ‘ringing’, Conejoloko, Mendicuti and César Ordoñez. By the time we got to the door of the hotel, took over 24 hours of travel.
At 9 am local time can not stand over in bed and went outside while TV remained the same at Wimbledon. At 10:00 a.m. yet to make that heat melting the soles, but will soon be frying a Webo in the asphalt. Cross the street and into the Rio Hotel to be credited to the press room. But as we enter the opposite side where the WSOP is held, you have to walk around the casino. A few meters I am encouraging a crowd to a group of slot players. I can not help but ask one of the organization …
“And that cock eto eh? (In English it sounds better.)
The World Series Of Tragaperring … I come to say. I look and all the players seem to focus on giving to the button as quickly as possible, no bank management of progress, nor have the odds to puncture melons and cherries. To my regret wonder what it’s all business … answer? the FPPs do more wins …
World Series Of Tragaperring: fight to death for the bracelet
I’m going up the aisle as Obelix, shaking his head and saying … these Romans are crazy! At least now there is less to reach the area of the bracelets … the corridor connecting the casino with rooms for conferences / conventions and are starting to see the flags with the face of the POY.
We were halfway down the hall and we came across a little boy of 20 and a cap placed at the tipical PokerStars Yanki (uséase, upside down) that is talking to a friend. I do not know him but his face sounds much cash have we played together? Do you owe money? Jarr … the “Postal Service” is nothing less than “one” Joe Each … now they’re already at the WSOP.
We arrived at the Pavillon room and impresses novelty is that although there are few people at the tables of satellites and cash, and most have painted to keep playing all night … it’s a matter sure to take advantage of jet lag to come play here and peel those who are playing 10 hours.
The newsroom seems to be closed so rid the hall, I greet my way to the “geniuses” of WSOTragaperring Sportbook and go to breakfast and see the world. The same game of tennis is on the big screen, and finally, I look at the score … should be tied at 30-odd games each (you know as I have, so do not mention above).
Football matches are about to start, I was approached by a New Yorker to ask for them and we start talking about furbol. It turns out that poker is a writer than likely have translated some of his works for some web sites. First time on this trip say what are the odds of passing this?
We first half, he will play a tournament and I take the accreditation …
I see a notice that Negreanu will be signing books in a couple of hours, it might be a good opportunity for me to sign a copy of his book and try messing for an interview. Then cancel the signing Poker kid … any cash game or golf? God knows, but in general around here tend to be very serious for these things.
In order … and with accreditation in hand, My next task is to locate Miki ‘Antimadridista’, which is in the same hotel as me (Golden Coast).
I take a stroll through the Amazon Room and speak Castilian hear … turn my head and see Miki and Cesar Garrido commenting tournament hands PL8 $ 1,500. There are 100 players and three Spanish, as the ‘Toro’ Paez is also at stake … the bubble is in 80 believe.
We release the credential to see the action up close. Many well-known face in the tournament as Phil Hellmuth, Barry Greenstein, ‘Jesus’ Ferguson … or Mike “The Mouth” Matusow is sitting to the left of Caesar. The background tables Annette Obrestad is playing in the last two tables of 6 max tournament shootout. I go to see it but there are plenty of colleagues in the rail mounting it good with a good amount of beer and I turn to PL8.
‘The Mouth’ Matusow looks at Cesar’
Game
If I am already beginning to feel the atmosphere of the WSOP, now is a joke … standing in the intersection of the tables Miki, Cesar and Hellmuth, try to be all the ‘Poker Brat “is making mischief, commenting all hands and giving his opinion if they ask and when not.
Matusow rises often to see the cane hands and put each other … When Phil is explaining to one of his desk because he played bad, high Matusow says to laughter from the whole table
“But what you are telling Phil?, If he (his opponent) had read” Play poker like the pros “would be eliminated from the tournament and long
In one of the most remote tables there is one player in a wheelchair appears to be quadriplegic. You can only move his head and one girl up cards so that you can see and move the tabs. Just a few days ago and told in an article in a local TV interview on the fact that poker can enjoy the competition around the world, with hardly any restrictions. But one thing to say, and another to see it live … impressive.
Returning to the tournament, Caesar gets a very interesting boat, by completing a wheel in the river which allows the boat to Scoop. Low and had nut flush draw on the turn but a three on the river will improve your hand.
I miss the hand that does the ‘Toro’ Paez, and soon would Miki, who with one hand with which you have to play the rest (do not remember the hand, but I think it was something like AK3x) not connect. Shortly after the bubble breaks and Cesar told us to Grummpy, Brais and I’m excited that this first box in the WSOP, with its corresponding flag in the Hendon Mob DB. Once in the tournament awards accelerates and comes shortly after Caesar, can not remember now exactly hand.
Phil always … love you
We’re going to the Pavilion, and we are at the NY player on a break. He says there is “a Spanish boy with scarf on his desk,” I go and Manuel Cubero. Then tell him that seems
jovencillo;)
Incidentally, my colleague thinks New Yorkers at first that I’m hesitating when I say that is the “Spanish National Champion.” We talked a while with Cuberos.
Shepherd is playing a couple of tables to the bottom. Now, mid-afternoon, the room is spectacular … a melting pot of cash … tournament satellites … …
Some satellites are playing Sit Spanish

Mortensen finished the tournament in sixth position, very close to getting his third bracelet and took $ 102,237 dollars, which will surely know a little but this finding only confirms the good way that is ‘The Matador’.
